In 1993, the project’s second album “The Cross Of Changes” was released, and was received just as well commercially, going on to sell six million copies in a single year. What’s more, it wasn’t a flash in the pan. The album was released on Virgin Records and Enigma became the biggest selling artist on their roster in the year of its release, 1990.

Originally a classical musician by trade, he realised that his true passion lay in pop music, so he sold his piano and by the time he was 21 he was releasing his first solo singles. Cretu, on the other hand, decided to make his last stand with a downtempo, experimental electronica album under the name Enigma. Y’see, the bands I mentioned before made a leap for rock stardom with an album of fantastic tunes with choruses the size of continents.
However, Michael Cretu probably had the tougher job out of all of them. Franz Ferdinand, for example were its members final attempt to make a career out of rock and roll before consigning it to an eternal hobby status.
A surprising number of bands have actually made it on the back of this. The failed songwriter putting together a band for one last-ditch attempt at stardom, giving themselves a year to make it and throwing everything they have at it. There are fewer more romantic stories in pop music than that of the last stand.
